10 Ways to Celebrate Earth Day
Monday, April 22, 2019 will mark the 49th anniversary of Earth Day. Across the world, various events will be held promoting environmental awareness. Want to get involved? Here a few ideas, ranging from events to activities you can do every day to help our planet.
- Volunteer. On April 22 join the DCO and help clean up Nason Street Park! Also, every year Franklin organizes a volunteer event that meets at Beaver Pond to help clean up targeted areas around town. This year’s meetup will take place on April 27 at 9 am. Clean up materials will be provided, but if you have gardening gloves or a rake bring them along! For more information see the event listing on Facebook.
- Research events near you. Check out sites like Eventbrite for Earth Day–specific outings. Some include planting trees in Boston, participating in charity runs, and cleaning and performing maintenance along Providence’s Riverwalk. Wherever your interests lie, you are sure to find something that fits your Earth Day agenda.
- Skip the plastic bags. Bring your own reusable ones when you go shopping.
- Use a refillable water bottle. Save money, not to mention the environment, by investing in a reusable water bottle.
- Collect trash. Go for a walk and bring along a trash bag to pick up any debris you see.
- Use energy-efficient lightbulbs. They may be pricier, but they can last up to five times longer than traditional bulbs.
- Skip the straw. If you have the option of not using a plastic straw with your beverage, go for it. Many companies are also adopting eco-friendly straws to replace the traditional plastic ones that end up in landfills and in the ocean.
- Conserve water. Think about your water usage. Little steps like shutting the faucet off when you brush your teeth can help conserve.
- Walk vs. drive. Need to run an errand around town? Get your Fitbit ready! Try walking instead of driving.
- Support eco-conscious businesses. If you have the option to, pick the item that says Fair Trade Certified. These products are held to important social and environmental standards.
Your efforts this Earth Day can help protect our planet for generations to come!
