What Exactly Is Sport Management?

It’s easy to end up thinking that sport management is just training new sports agents to do the best job possible when representing their clients. In reality, sport management is a pretty large field, consisting of plenty of different career options that handle all of the aspects of managing a stadium and a sports team.

What Do You Learn When Studying Sport Management?

Some of the many classes that students will take at ¶¶ÒõÆƽâ°æ when majoring in Sport Management include economics, sports law, venue management, statistics, strategic management, sports psychology, and of course, the history and philosophy of sports. This well-rounded program sets students up to work in any number of sports-related fields.

What Types of Sport Management Jobs Are There?

So, what can you do with a degree in Sport Management? There are plenty of career options, including:

Game Day Coordinator

In addition to facility managers, there are also game day coordinators. These workers are in charge of coordinating on game days, from the media in the booth and on the field to when the other team will arrive in their locker room. They play a crucial role in making sure that everything goes smoothly, despite the many moving pieces.

Event Coordinator

Some sports teams also hold special events on non-game days or during the off-season. For instance, there may be a unique restaurant or room in the stadium that is rented out for special events that need to be organized. Other events, like those that invite the public in during the off-season, also need to have someone in charge of planning and facilitating the event. This is where the event coordinator comes into play.

Facility Manager

Facility managers ensure that everything goes smoothly, both on game days and off days, as they oversee employees who clean the space, handle ticket sales, keep an eye on the gift shops, and make sure that the food sales locations are spotless and pass inspections. When it comes to the main facility, they are in charge of everything.

Guest Manager

Guest managers, on the other hand, have two important jobs. One, they have to make sure that the VIPs, like the team’s owners, investors, and players’ spouses are properly taken care of on game day. They coordinate their food orders, seat arrangements, and more. And two, they have to ensure that everyone in the stadium, all of the “guests” who purchased tickets, are receiving the entertainment and service that they paid for.

Marketing Consultants and Coordinators

Marketing is a part of everything you’ll see in the field of sports. Teams need to sell tickets, advertisements and sponsorships, promote both individual players and the team as a whole, manage the team’s online presence, get the word out about any special events that are planned at the stadium and so much more. Marketing consultants and coordinators strategically plan how to best promote the team and reach fans, and then make it happen.

These are just some of the many career options you can pursue with a degree in Sport Management. No matter what career path you pick, you can do what you love in the field that you love!
