When you think of careers in the entertainment industry, what’s the first thing that comes to mind? In most cases, it’s the high-profile options, like actor, director, and cinematographer. If you’re asked to elaborate on behind the scenes jobs, you’d probably name options like scenery technician, lighting or prop directors, and costume designers. However, there’s one thing that all of these positions have in common: an entertainment manager. As one of the many behind the scenes positions, entertainment managers have a lot of power, and often start their careers with a degree in arts and entertainment management.

Wondering what can you do with one of these degrees? Here are a few options to add to consider.

Booking or Talent Agents

Not only are booking or talent agents (the terms are exchangeable) in charge of finding talent to represent, but they also have to work their connections to get their talent in front of casting directors in order to further their careers. As a result, most talent agents specialize in one type of talent, such as child actors, adult actors, musicians, and so on.

Artist Manager

Have you ever wondered who schedules the live shows, manages to get all of the music equipment from point A to point B on time, and herds the musicians from one gig to the next? That would be an artist manager. They’re in charge of all aspects of a touring band’s productions, from the companies making their merchandise to helping them make the big decisions regarding their careers.

Event Manager

If you’ve sat through a play or musical and wondered what’s involved in putting together the entire production, then a career as an event manager might be the best option for you. Event managers often work for a theater or playhouse and put together each season’s theatrical options. They’re in charge of choosing the plays or musicals, selecting directors, and juggling all the pieces that go into a successful production.

Tour Managers

A tour manager works closely with artist managers in order to plan out every aspect of a touring production. They collaborate with the companies hired to move the sets, instruments, and other equipment, as well as with the local people hired to set everything up in a new venue. Whether they’re working with a touring band or a touring company, like those for Broadway musicals that hit the road, there’s a lot of travel and plenty of fun involved.

Marketing Manager

A musical or theater production would be nothing without marketing. These marketing managers are in charge of placing local ads, planning out interviews with the local press, and doing everything in their power to ensure that the events are sold out or as close to it as possible.
