Making History: A ¶¶ÒõÆƽâ°æ Student's Journey to Becoming a New England Patriots Cheerleader
Steven Sonntag '19, a ¶¶ÒõÆƽâ°æ dance major, recently made history by being one of two male dancers to make the New England Patriots cheerleading squad for the first time in decades. After showcasing his talents at the preliminary auditions, Sonntag continued his journey to the at Foxwoods Casino Resort where he would be evaluated on his dance technique, confidence, style and showmanship.
“I get butterflies every time I think about being on that stage,” Sonntag said. “It was an experience and opportunity that I could have only dreamed and hoped for. I just let everything go and had so much fun.”
Sonntag was selected as a finalist and moved on to Boot Camp, the final step of the audition process. After two weeks of workouts, mock interviews and team building exercises, Sonntag learned that he had earned a spot on the .
During his four years at ¶¶ÒõÆƽâ°æ, Sonntag founded the ¶¶ÒõÆƽâ°æ Pom Team, a competitive dance team that often performs at events on campus. The team recently competed at the 2019 New England Dance Team Championship, finishing in 2nd place in Open Pom and 4th place in Open Jazz.
